The Surrey Downs League Development Division/League, our Remit for this exciting and highly successful League!
This division has been very successful we feel over the last 3 years, (2022/2023/2024) despite the changes in teams and divisional formats.
Now seems a good time to briefly reiterate the basic principles all Surrey Downs League Member Clubs asked for when the league was set up.
This is a friendly league designed primarily to develop players who are not yet ready for a full season of league cricket. These might be junior players who have had little exposure to competitive adult cricket matches at school or their clubs, or adults returning after a long break or wanting occasional games of a slightly lower standard than league cricket normally provides.
This division is probably not suitable for junior players who are u15 or older and playing Tier 1 junior cricket and/or strong school cricket.
The league is run flexibly by the clubs and is mostly about getting the game on rather than winning and final league table positions.
If a side fields a player who is too strong for this league — in order to put out a full eleven — they should not be asked to bat or bowl in match-winning positions. This is in order to let the usual players develop their confidence, skills and experience as fully as possible.
The fixtures are timed to be mostly mid season (late May to mid July) when clubs have maximum availability especially of junior players.
Given the nature of many of the participants it is critical that the highest behaviour and personal standards are upheld in this league. The league is committed to the ECB’s recreational conduct regulations (RCR) in exactly the same way as applies in the main Surrey Downs League (SDL).
The Surrey Downs League hope this Development league continues to flourish for many seasons to come as well as allowing teams, when they are ready, to apply to join the main Surrey Downs League divisions.
